Greenwashing & Toner Reviews
When it comes down to it toner reviews and articles that educate consumers about new developments in the printing supplies industry are a great resource for consumers, particularly those who are not intimately familiar with the ins and outs of either the printing or technology industries. These guides often provide excellent advice about the advantages or disadvantages of choosing brand name or re-manufactured cartridges, which types of ink would work best in your personal printer, who is offering the best deal at the time, and a host of other useful tips and tricks intended to save you money. At the same time a new trend towards “greenwashing” has been developing in toner reviews that is a growing concern for consumers.
“Greenwashing” is the term for either lying outright or whitewashing claims about the environmental benefits and impact of a particular product. For example, if a brand new plastic and aluminum cartridge claims to be recyclable and talks about the benefits of recycling, it leads consumers to believe that buying this product is more environmentally friendly than another. However, it is just a new cartridge–most if not all cartridges can potentially be recycled, and this one has not been yet. Practices like this are designed to confuse the buyer into believing that they are saving the environment by purchasing a brand new product that would have actually caused more environmental harm in its manufacture than a real recycled cartridge would.
It is always important to be aware of this possibility when reading toner reviews. Make sure that you know the difference between recycled and recyclable (the potential to be recycled); to put it another way, check to see if the cartridge is post-consumer or post-industrial. Actually recycled cartridges prevent 3-5 pounds of plastic and aluminum from getting dumped into a landfill and save up to 10 liters of oil used in the manufacture of new cartridges. Falling victim to a greenwashing campaign conserves no natural resources and can cost you much more money.
